I'm going to share with you some traditions that have shocked me.
In the Indian state of Maharashtra a dangerous tradition has been practiced for the last 500 years; when a new baby is born, his parents throw the baby from the top of a building to a sheet. We may think that this is a crazy and senseless tradition but indu people believe that the practice of this ritual blesses their children with good health and luck. You can watch this video to understand much better how it's practiced:
The foot binding is a traditional Chinese custom but many people think that it was also practiced on Japanese Geishas. The foot binding consisted on binding the foot of a girl with 4-5 years to prevent the growth of them, and like that she couldn't run, work, jump... or even walk. This tradition was used because on Chinese culture small foot were a sign of beauty and sensuality, but it had hard consequences; many woman suffered deformation of their foot. Nowadays this painful process isn't practiced anywhere but we can still see some Chinese old woman with tiny foot and walking in short steps.
Here are some consequences:
The Karen tribe is located about 40 kilometres from Mae Song Hong, in Thailand. The woman of this tribu follow an old tradition that consists on having their necks the most large they can. To get their targets, they use some golden colour rings and they put them around their necks lengthening it to incredible dimensions by pushing their clavicle down. They wear this rings on the age of 5 more or less and they wear them all their life, adding new rings over the years. There are many theories of the reason of wearing those rings, but the most of the people believes that it's because the large necks are a symbol of beauty and they are more attractive on their culture. Also it's believed that those rings indicate wealth or a rich family.

The old Mayas are very known in the world because of their multiple traditions, but for me, the stranger one is the artificial cranial deformation. This deformation is done by distorsing the normal growth of a child's skull binding two pieces of wood. The deformation of the crane begins a month after the birth for six months. The tradition was practiced because demonstrated higher status, more intelligence and a closer contact with the world of spirits.
